Sexual abuse is any unwanted exposure, at any age, to sexual experiences through:

• Witnessing sexual exposure or actions

• Sexualized kissing, hugging and tickling

• Oral sex

• Intercourse or any other penetration

• Any other sexual behaviors to which both persons are not consenting
Sexual abuse can be identified as sexual trauma when the psychological and physiological consequences include:

• Overwhelming emotion

• Intense fear

• Feelings of utter helplessness

• Hypervigilance

• Intrusive imagery and flashbacks

• Dissociation

• Reduced ability to deal with stress

• Sleep disturbances

• Patterns of reenactment

• Chronic pain syndromes
